KNX puts the switches, dimmers, valve actuators and blind drives of a building on a common bus and lets them talk. Every device on that bus reaches its own decision; no computer sits in the middle handing out orders. Pressing a key leaves a message on the bus, and the actuators configured to listen for it answer. That is what the distributed arrangement buys: one failed device does not leave a whole room dark.

Lighting and climate can undo each other's work inside the same volume. A blind motor cutting out the midday sun drops the cooling load, yet the same movement may make artificial light necessary, so the two decisions have to be taken together. When an occupancy sensor reports a volume has emptied, heating is not shut off but pulled back to a setback value it can recover from quickly. Reheating a volume that has gone cold costs more than holding its temperature.

In a hotel room these rules move to a layer the guest never sees. Read together, the card slot, the door contact and the movement detector show whether the room is genuinely empty; an arrangement that watches the slot alone is fooled by a spare card left in it. A do-not-disturb request likewise stops being a sign hung on the handle and lands on the floor attendant's screen.

Commissioning

A scene is several devices moving together into a state written beforehand: a meeting setting, a night setting, a maintenance setting. Mechanical plant itself usually speaks over BACnet or RS-485, and the point where the two worlds meet is a gateway. Unless which data crosses in which direction is set down there in writing, two different truths appear on site. Nor is the job over when the cabling is finished: every group address, every actuator channel and every key is verified individually in the field.
