Work in an occupied building does not proceed as on an empty site. The route follows not the shortest path on the drawing but what the structure permits. A suspended ceiling that cannot come down, a shear wall that may not be drilled, a fire compartment seal remade wherever it is crossed — each shortens the list. In a listed building, every intervention carries its own approval. The working window is a constraint too: a corridor in a full hotel cannot be closed by day, and a production line stops only to its shutdown plan. Written down during the survey, they keep a later item of work from becoming a surprise.

Design and site sequence

Design turns measured reality into an applicable document: line diagram, cable schedule, point list, panel layout. Cable cross-section is chosen for distance, panel ventilation for the heat of the devices inside. Without clash checking against the mechanical and electrical disciplines, the same ceiling void has been promised to three trades. On site the sequence is part of the design too: conduit at first fix, pulling at second fix, then labelling and measurement reports.

Training and maintenance

Point verification is the slowest part of the job and the most expensive to skip: every detector is seen reading from its own address, every command driving its own output. Mislabelled ends surface here, and no handover is made until the snag list is closed.

Training divides in two: what staff watching the screen all day must learn is not what the maintenance team needs. One knows daily use, the other fault isolation and part replacement. The maintenance calendar is built on consumable life rather than the device list: batteries, filters, disk health, line measurements, software versions. Where that calendar is not run, an installation weakens quietly within a few seasons, and the fault nobody noticed appears the day it is needed.
