Off-the-shelf products cover a wide field, and most requirements stay inside it. Bespoke engineering arises only where a genuine gap remains between the behaviour asked for and what products on the market already do. Showing that the gap is real is the first part of the work.

When the standard product is the right answer

If an existing product meets a requirement approximately, that is usually the correct answer. Behind an off-the-shelf product sit a continuously updated code base, defect reports surfaced by a large user base and a known support channel. Every custom-built component writes all of that onto the project instead: maintenance, debugging and continuity become the obligation of whoever developed it.

A proposal for bespoke work therefore opens with a written justification of why existing products cannot meet the requirement. Where the justification is weak, what is called for is not new software but correct configuration of the product already in hand.

Where the gap genuinely remains

Certain places produce the gap again and again. Bringing data from several manufacturers' interfaces onto a single screen, ordered by the operator's own processes, may not fit the data model of a ready-made management application. Service robots work to the general scenario they were built for; a robot that has to take the lift, pass controlled doors with authorisation and reach a call line needs a binding layer specific to the site. AI models working on video, in turn, do not reproduce in a plant the performance they show in a test environment, unless they are thresholded to the conditions of that site.

What these jobs share is that they run like projects rather than products. Scope is written, acceptance criteria are set at the outset, a limited validation installation is trialled, and rollout follows once the expected behaviour has been seen. The outcome cannot be promised in advance; where it can be, a standard product already exists.
