Fire detection is not an area left to the building owner's taste. Where a detector goes, how the panel is supplied and how commissioning is documented are set by published standards; the EN 54 family defines the framework components from detector to panel to sounder have to meet. Design freedom stays inside that framework.

Detection method follows the volume itself. A smoke detector measures how airborne particles scatter light, a heat detector watches temperature cross a threshold or climb quickly, a flame detector sees the radiation band peculiar to combustion. Steam in a kitchen, exhaust in a car park and dust in a workshop mislead a smoke detector constantly, so those volumes take heat or flame detection.

Every detector on an addressable loop is recognised individually. The first fact reported is therefore not that there is a fire but where it is, and the response team goes to a volume rather than a floor. Where a verification period is defined, the panel does not turn the first signal straight into a general alarm; within a short wait it seeks a second confirmation and spares a needless evacuation.

The moment of evacuation

Evacuation is a harder problem than the alarm itself. Hearing the sounder, people first look at one another to work out what is happening; a spoken directional announcement shortens that hesitation and steers the crowd onto the right escape route. Escape route lighting comes on, door holding magnets release, lifts descend to the evacuation floor, and ventilation stops rather than feed the fire.

Life safety equipment allows for the instant power fails. Panel and field devices carry on from batteries; alarm and announcement runs are pulled in fire-resistant cable so they finish their work before the fire itself severs them. An untested fire detection scheme counts as not working, so the operating period runs to a regular testing calendar.
