A fault report often names the wrong device. When a card reader will not release the door, when no footage reaches the recording server, or when the paging line stays silent, the trouble usually sits in the line that carries the end device. Cabling and switching are meant to stay invisible; their quality is measured only when they fail.

Fibre routing, backbone redundancy, the Wi-Fi channel plan and authorisation layers are engineered as separate line items, yet each is a section through one topology. Which path the data takes, whether a second exists when the first breaks, and who sees the traffic on it — three answers belonging in one drawing.

The passive layer is laid once and stays for years; the active layer changes, grows and is renewed. Spare capacity in the containment, an alternate route and a labelling scheme planned generously at the outset make every later intervention cheaper.

Continuity is not bought as a device

Redundancy is a decision about which outage is acceptable. A backup arrangement built before the recovery time and tolerable data loss are settled produces copies and nothing else; until a restore is rehearsed, the procedure counts as unverified.
