A shoreline is an abrasive environment for field hardware. Salt-laden damp works into the screw seats of even a stainless housing, wind shakes every piece of equipment on a mast, and summer sun heats cable trunking. For hardware in the open, an IP66 housing and marine-grade fixings are the starting point, and material and earthing decisions are a question of service life. Cable joints and enclosure gaskets are where a fault most often begins in salt air.

At a marina and a yacht harbour the ground is not fixed. A floating pontoon moves with the tide and the swell, so supply and data lines running out to it are pulled with slack left for that movement. Power and water units repeat at every finger pontoon, berthing arrangements change through the season, and an arriving boat may come alongside in the morning or at midnight. Out of season part of the pontoon empties completely and the site is left to itself for a long stretch.

At port facilities the landward side can be defined by a line: gate, barrier, card entry and an LPR point. On the seaward side there is no such line. Because the approach stays open, detection rests not on a physical obstacle but on methods that sweep the water surface. A radar track, thermal imaging and comparison against navigation data fill that gap. Across maritime operating areas, events from the two sides are read on one shared timeline.
